Asks little Fred.
His brother says,
The rose is red.
What is white?
My kite is white.

What is grey?
Now, can you say?
Yes, I can.

The Most Pleasant Tree
From the very top of the tallest tree
A little breeze called down to me:
“Come up here and you will see

How soon do the streams softly flow?
When do the first flowers gently blow?
Where do the strong winds suddenly go?
Why do the plants slowly grow?
I don’t know.
But the wind is blowing lightly.
The sun is shining brightly.
High up in the tree
A bird sings merrily.
And the streams will flow,
Flowers will blow
Winds will go,
Grasses will grow, even if I don’t know

Autumn Comes

And the days are grey and cool.
Do the birds look down and see

Fred comes from school one winter day
As clever as can be,
And wants to show to all around
How smart a boy is he.
And so at dinner he begins:
“Papa, you think you see
There are two chickens on that dish,
But now I’ll prove that there are three:
First, this is one and that is two,
As plain as plain can be.
I add the one into the two,
And two and one make three!”
“Just so,” answers his Papa,
“If what you say is three,
I will take one, Mamma takes one,
The third we’ll leave for you.”

It’s not always easy to keep yourself busy.
The homework is done, it’s fun!
The book is read and is given to Fred.
The cat is fed, but why is it sad?
The dishes are washed,
All films are watched.
It’s not always easy to keep yourself busy.

Shopping, shopping, Christmas shopping.
Mums are hurrying — running, hopping.
Presents, boxes everywhere,
Cards and crackers, teddy-bears,
Lots of useless pretty things:
Candles, tinsel, golden rings,
I’ve been doing shopping too.
Look at me: you’ll see it’s true:
Messy clothes and messy hair —
Christmas, Christmas everywhere

Two roads diverged in a yellow wood,
And sorry I could not travel both
And be one traveler, long I stood
And looked down one as far as I could
To where it bent in the undergrowth.
Then took the other, as just as fair,
And having perhaps the better claim,
Because it was grassy and wanted wear;
Though as for that the passing there
Had worn them really about the same.
And both that morning equally lay
In leaves no step had trodden black.
Oh, I kept the first for another day!
Yet knowing how way leads on to way,
I doubted if I should ever come back.
I shall be telling this with a sigh
Somewhere ages and ages hence:
Two roads diverged in a wood, and I—
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference.
Стоял я, задумавшись, у поворота;
И больше, казалось мне, заросла;
If you can keep your head when all about you
Are losing theirs and blaming it on you,
If you can trust yourself when all men doubt you,
But make allowance for their doubting too;
If you can wait and not be tired by waiting,
Or being lied about, don’t deal in lies,
Or being hated don’t give way to hating,
And yet don’t look too good, nor talk too wise:
If you can dream-and not make dreams your master;
If you can think-and not make thoughts your aim,
If you can meet with Triumph and Disaster
And treat those two impostors just the same;
If you can bear to hear the truth you’ve spoken
Twisted by knaves to make a trap for fools,
Or watch the things you gave your life to, broken,
And stoop and build ’em up with worn-out tools:
If you can make one heap of all your winnings
And risk it on one turn of pitch-and-toss,
And lose, and start again at your beginnings
And never breathe a word about your loss;
If you can force your heart and nerve and sinew
To serve your turn long after they are gone,
And so hold on when there is nothing in you
Except the Will which says to them: ‘Hold on!’
If you can talk with crowds and keep your virtue,
Or walk with Kings-nor lose the common touch,
If neither foes nor loving friends can hurt you,
If all men count with you, but none too much;
If you can fill the unforgiving minute
With sixty seconds’ worth of distance run,
Yours is the Earth and everything that’s in it,
And-which is more-you’ll be a Man, my son!
При том и критиков своих любя;
Не тщишься превосходство показать;
Ты с равной силой усомнишься в них;
Засохшим клеем скрепишь по кускам;
Ничем не дав понять, что пожалел;
Твердит: «Держитесь!», дабы им помочь;
Коль ценишь всех, без предпочтений, ты;
В 2003 году Эдриан Митчелл перед войной в Ираке вновь прочитал свои знаменитые строки из “To whom it may concern”:
I was run over by the truth one day.
Ever since the accident I’ve walked this way
So stick my legs in plaster
Tell me lies about Vietnam.
Heard the alarm clock screaming with pain,
Couldn’t find myself so I went back to sleep again
So fill my ears with silver
Stick my legs in plaster
Tell me lies about Vietnam.
Every time I shut my eyes all I see is flames.
Made a marble phone book and I carved out all the names
So coat my eyes with butter
Fill my ears with silver
Stick my legs in plaster
Tell me lies about Vietnam.
I smell something burning, hope it’s just my brains.
They’re only dropping peppermints and daisy-chains
So stuff my nose with garlic
Coat my eyes with butter
Fill my ears with silver
Stick my legs in plaster
Tell me lies about Vietnam.
Where were you at the time of the crime?
Down by the Cenotaph drinking slime
So chain my tongue with whisky
Stuff my nose with garlic
Coat my eyes with butter
Fill my ears with silver
Stick my legs in plaster
Tell me lies about Vietnam.
You put your bombers in, you put your conscience out,
You take the human being and you twist it all about
So scrub my skin with women
Chain my tongue with whisky
Stuff my nose with garlic
Coat my eyes with butter
Fill my ears with silver
Stick my legs in plaster
Tell me lies about Vietnam.

Моим любимым произведением Эдриана Митчелла является “The Castaways or Vote for the Caliban” Это веселое, потешное и в то же время тонкое философское стихотворение без рифмы.
A Pacific Ocean —
A blue demi-globe.
Islands like punctuation marks.
A cruising airliner;
Passengers unwrapping pats of butter.
A hurricane arises,
Tosses the plane into the sea.
Five of them, flung onto an island beach,
Survived.
Tom the reporter.
Susan the botanist.
Jim the high jump champion.
Bill the carpenter.
Mary the eccentric widow.
Tom the reporter sniffed out a stream of drinkable water.
Susan the botanist identified the banana tree.
Jim the high-jump champion jumped up and down and gave them each a bunch.
Bill the carpenter knocked up a table for their banana supper.
Mary the eccentric widow buried the banana skins, but only after they had asked her twice.
They all gathered sticks and lit a fire.
There was an incredible sunset.
Next morning they held a committee meeting.
Tom, Susan, Jim and Bill
Voted to make the best of things.
Mary, the eccentric widow, abstained.
Tom the reporter killed several dozen wild pigs.
Tanned their skins into parchment
And printed the Island News with the ink of squids.
Susan the botanist developed the new strains of banana
Which tasted of chocolate, beefsteak, peanut butter,
Chicken and boot polish.
Jim the high jump champion organized organized games
Which he always won easily.
Bill the carpenter constructed a wooden water wheel
And converted the water’s energy into electricity
Using iron ore from the hills, he constructed lamppost.
They all worried about Mary, the eccentric widow,
Her lack of confidence and her-
But there wasn’t time to coddle her.
The volcano erupted, but they dug a trench
And diverted the lava into the sea
Where it found a spectacular pier
They were attacked by the pirates but defeated them
With bamboo bazookas firing
Sea-urchins packed with home-made nitro-glycerin.
They gave the cannibals a dose of their own medicine
And survived an earthquake thanks to their skill in jumping.
Tom had been a court reporter
So he became a magistrate and solved disputes
Susan the Botanist established
A University which also served as a museum.
Jim the high-jump champion
Was put in charge of law enforcement-
Jumped on them when they were bad.
Bill the carpenter built himself a church,
Preached there every Sunday.
But Mary the eccentric widow…
Each evening she wandered down the island’s main street,
Past the Stock Exchange, the Houses of Parliament,
The prison and the arsenal.
Past the Prospero Souvenir Shop,
Past the Robert Louis Stevenson Movie Studios, past the Daniel Defoe Motel
She nervously wandered and sat on the end of the pier of lava,
Breathing heavily,
As if at a loss,
As if at a lover,
She opened her eyes wide
To the usual incredible sunset.

И пожелание «break a leg» было изначально лишь сокращенным «break a leg line» — то есть, выступить в спектакле и получить деньги за работу.
Homeric laughter —
Heel of Achilles —
«Et tu, Brute?»
To kill the goose that lays the golden eggs —
A bird in the hand is worth two in the bush —
No pain, no gain —
Фразу «No pain, no gain» (досл.
Идиому «Once in a blue moon» часто переводят как «Когда рак на горе свистнет». А вот «Once in a blue moon» обозначает событие очень редкое, но при этом возможное.
В английском языке есть прекрасная пословица «People who live in glass houses should not throw stones».
There were many things he could do. He could climb a tree but that was putting all his eggs in one basket. If he were detected, they had nothing more difficult to do than wait.
Фразеологизм «That was putting all his eggs in one basket» перевели как «это слишком рискованно».

- Вы узнаете сразу много новых слов, которые, благодаря присутствию рифмы, не составляют трудностей в запоминании и освоении;
- Вы видите, как формируются предложения — знание каждого слова в отдельности меньше поможет в жизни, чем умение выразить мысль английскими словами;
Sun of the Sleepless!
Sun of the sleepless! melancholy star!
- Whose tearful beam glows tremulously far!
- That show’s the darkness thou canst not dispel,
The Red Rose whispers of passion,And the White Rose breathes of love; O, the Red Rose is a falcon, And the White Rose is a dove. But I send you a cream-white rosebud with a flush on its petal tips; For the love that is purest and sweetest
has a kiss of desire on the lips.
- If love is not worth loving, then life is not worth living,Nor aught is worth remembering but well forgot; For store is not worth storing and gifts are not worth giving,
- If love is not;
- And idly cold is death-cold, and life-heat idly hot, And vain is any offering and vainer our receiving,
- And vanity of vanities is all our lot.
- Better than life’s heaving heart is death’s heart unheaving, Better than the opening leaves are the leaves that rot, For there is nothing left worth achieving or retrieving,
- If love is not.
- Being your slave what should I do but tend,Upon the hours, and times of your desire?I have no precious time at all to spend;
- Nor services to do till you require.
- Nor dare I chide the world-without-end hour,Whilst I (my sovereign) watch the clock for you,Nor think the bitterness of absence sour,
- When you have bid your servant once adieu.

How Cruel Are The Parents |
How Cruel Are The Parents How cruel are the parents Who riches only prize, And to the wealthy booby Poor Woman sacrifice! Meanwhile, the hapless Daughter Has but a choice of strife; To shun a tyrant Father’s hate- Become a wretched Wife. The ravening hawk pursuing, The trembling dove thus flies, To shun impelling ruin, Awhile her pinions tries; Till, of escape despairing, No shelter or retreat, She trusts the ruthless Falconer, And drops beneath his feet. |
Jockie Has Taken The Parting Kiss |
Jockie has taken the parting kiss, Over the mountains he is gone, And with him is all my bliss — Nothing but grief with me remain. Spare my love, you winds that blow, Driven sleets and beating rain! Spare my love, you feathery snow, Drifting over the frozen plain! When the shades of evening creep Over the day’s fair happy eye, Sound and safely may he sleep, Sweetly blythe his awakening be! He will think on her he loves, Fondly he will repeat her name; For wherever he distant roves, Jockie’s heart is still at home. |
Hostess, Count The Reckoning. |
Then, hostess, count the reckoning, The reckoning, the reckoning! Then, hostess, count the reckoning, And bring a drink of ale more! Gone is the day, and dark is the night, But we will never stray for want of light, For ale and brandy is stars and moon, And blood red wine is the rising sun. There is wealth and ease for gentlemen, And simple folk must fight and fend (for themselves); But here we are all in one accord For every man that is drunk as a lord. My stoup (of ale) is a holy pool, That heals the wounds of care and sorrow, And Pleasure is a wanton trout: If you drink it all, you will find him out!

Thou hast left me ever; Thou has left me ever, Jamie, Thou hast left me ever: Aften hast thou vow’d that Death Only should us sever; Now thou’st left thy lass for aye- I maun see thee never, Jamie, I’ll see thee never. Thou hast me forsaken, Jamie, Thou hast me forsaken; Thou hast me forsaken, Jamie, Thou hast me forsaken; Thou canst love another jo, While my heart is breaking; Soon my weary een I’ll close, Never mair to waken, Jamie, Never mair to waken! |
It Was Not Her Lovely Blue Eyes |
It was not her lovely blue eyes was my ruin: Fair though she be, that was never my undoing. It was the dear smile when nobody did pay attention to us. It was the bewitching, sweet, stolen glance of kindness! Sore do I fear that to hope is denied me, Sore do I fear that despair must stay with me; But though cruel Fortune should fate us to sever, Queen shall she be in my bosom for ever. Chloris, I am thine with a passion sincerest, And you have plighted me love of the dearest, And you are the angel that never can alter — Sooner the sun in his motion would falter!

The Road Not Taken
https://englishfox.ru/wp-content/uploads/2019/11/The-Road.mp3
- Two roads diverged in a yellow wood,
And sorry I could not travel both
And be one traveler, long I stood
And looked down one as far as I could - To where it bent in the undergrowth.
- Then took the other, as just as fair,
And having perhaps the better claim,
Because it was grassy and wanted wear;
Though as for that the passing there
Had worn them really about the same.
And both that morning equally lay
In leaves no step had trodden black.
Oh, I kept the first for another day!
Yet knowing how way leads on to way,
I doubted if I should ever come back.
- I shall be telling this with a sigh
Somewhere ages and ages hence:
Two roads diverged in a wood, and I—
I took the one less traveled by, - And that has made all the difference.
- (Robert Lee Frost)
Стоял я, задумавшись, у поворота;

- Вы узнаете сразу много новых слов, которые, благодаря присутствию рифмы, не составляют трудностей в запоминании и освоении;
- Вы видите, как формируются предложения — знание каждого слова в отдельности меньше поможет в жизни, чем умение выразить мысль английскими словами;
- If love is not worth loving, then life is not worth living,Nor aught is worth remembering but well forgot; For store is not worth storing and gifts are not worth giving,
- If love is not;
- And idly cold is death-cold, and life-heat idly hot, And vain is any offering and vainer our receiving,
- And vanity of vanities is all our lot.
- Better than life’s heaving heart is death’s heart unheaving, Better than the opening leaves are the leaves that rot, For there is nothing left worth achieving or retrieving,
- If love is not.
- Being your slave what should I do but tend,Upon the hours, and times of your desire?I have no precious time at all to spend;

- Then took the other, as just as fair,
And having perhaps the better claim,
Because it was grassy and wanted wear;
Стоял я, задумавшись, у поворота;

Christmas Vocabulary – Рождественский словарь, Xmas – Рождество; to look forward to the holiday – с нетерпением ждать праздника;…

Little mouse, Come to my house, Sit on the chair, Eat a pear. |
The moon is high. The sea is deep. My dear son Is fast asleep. |
Summer was fun, And it was cool, Now we are going Back to school! |
An April day can bring us rain And rain can bring us flowers. No wonder people like to see Those rainy April showers!
The sun is shining all around; It shines on field and tree, It shines on all the flowers here. And on the ships at sea. |
It’s winter
It’s winter, it’s winter,
Let us skate and ski! It’s winter, it’s winter,It’s great fun for me!
Snowflakes
Snowflakes are nice,
Snowflakes are white. They fall by day,They fall at night.
(“Dear Stranger!”).
Hands up, hands down, (Рукивверх, рукивниз,)
Touch your head, turn around.
Hands up, hands down,
Touch your toes, thumbs down.
Hands up, hands down,
Touch your feet and now sit down.

The less he spoke the more he heard, Why aren’t all like that wise old bird?

https://lizasenglish.ru/wp-content/uploads/2017/09/poem18.mp3 Leaves are floating softly down; Some are red and some are brown. The wind goes «swish» through the air; When you look back, there are no leaves there.
I had a box of crayons, All colourful and new. I lent my friend a crayon. And – oops! – it broke in two! My friend said he was sorry, I answered, “I don’t care,” Because we both can color With these crayons we share!
Under the waves, Down deep in the sea, Live animals different From you and from me. Manatees, walruses, Dolphins and seals, Starfishes, sea urchins, Lobsters and eels! They live in the water, They don’t live on land, Some swim and some float And some crawl on the sand.

2 | a lifeguard stand |
3 | a life preserver (BrE – a lifebelt), a rubber ring |
4 | a snack bar / a refreshment stand |
5 | a vendor |
6 | a swimmer |

24 | a (beach) blanket |
25 | a shovel |
26 | a pail/bucket |
Ну, полежим часок-другой на солнышке (to lie in the sun), позагораем (to sunbathe), а дальше что?
Можно прогуляться по берегу (to have a walk along the coast), отправиться собирать ракушки (seashells). Еще можно прыгнуть с пирса (to jump off the pier), конечно, если это разрешено.
Те, кто только учатся, плавают по-собачьи (to dog paddle / to doggy paddle / to do the dog paddle), кто-то предпочитает плавать брассом (to do (the) breaststroke / to swim breaststroke) – это самый популярный стиль плавания среди отдыхающих.
Мужчины часто плавают кролем (to do (the) crawl / to swim crawl) или на спине (to do (the) backstroke / to swim backstroke), а искушенные могут удивить баттерфляем (to do (the) butterfly / to swim butterfly).
Когда будете находиться на берегу, не забудьте надеть подходящий головной убор (to put on the proper headgear), а то рискуете получить солнечный удар (sunstroke), который часто сопровождается головокружением (to feel dizzy) и высокой температурой (a high temperature).
На берегу можно поиграть в карты (to play cards) или в нарды (to play backgammon).

AT THE BEACH
Pip and Posy. The new friend.
Pip and Posy. The new friend.

It’s summer time.
I’m feeling fine.
It feels so good leaving school behind.
The sun will shine.
This season’s mine.
I’m happy now that it’s summer time.
Plants and trees are in full bloom.
Summer’s here on the twenty first of June.
It’s summer time.
I’m feeling fine.
The sun is up and it sets past nine.
The weather’s kind
In summer time.
This is the season to unwind.
Animals are active.
And their young are growing strong.
Everything’s in harmony when nature sings along.
It’s summer time.
I’m feeling fine.
I play all day with some friends of mine.
The sun will shine.
This season’s mine.
I’m happy now that it’s summer time!
We’re happy now that it’s summer time!

Getting ready
Перво-наперво нужно взять с собой купальник (a bathing costume/swimming costume), также его называют «a two piece costume» или «bikini».

Having fun on the water
Вы можете также покататься на лодке (rowing in a boat, kayak).
What kinds of water sports does the resort offer? –
Where can I go surfing/diving/jet skiing here?

Can I buy here a lilo / sunglasses / bikini? –
May I join you?

- ABCDE This is my familyGHIJ I love them every dayKLMNO Mother, father, baby, oh PQRST Brother, sister, you can see UVWXYZ All the people in my family
Good night mother, Good night father, Kiss your little son. Good night sister, Good night brother, Good night everyone.
Twinkle, twinkle, little star, How I wonder what you are. Up above the world so high,
