Поздравляют с Новым годом фразой «Happy New Year!» Поздравлять с наступающим и прошедшим в англоязычных культурах не принято.

New Year’s in Russia

New Year’s Day is one of the biggest and most popular holidays in Russia. Like in most other countries, New Year’s Day falls on the 1st of January here, but the celebration begins on New Year’s Eve, on the 31st of December. Most people start celebrating it in the evening and finish early in the morning. The most important part is the moment when the New Year begins – at midnight.

In Russia, New Year’s is a bigger holiday than Christmas, and it is very similar to Christmas in Western cultures. The Russian Orthodox Church celebrates Christmas on the 7th of January, but, unlike Christmas in Western countries, it is a strictly religious holiday. In other words, usually, people do not have parties and family dinners on Christmas. We also do not have traditions of giving presents, putting up a Christmas tree and decorating in the Christmas period. We do all that for New Year’s.

In December, people shop for presents and Christmas trees (we call them “New Year trees”). It is customary to give presents on New Year’s Eve. Most families make a lot of dishes and invite guests over. The guests might bring gifts, especially if there are little children there, but it is not necessary. Usually, people in Russia give presents to their family and friends. As for gifts for children, these are brought by Grandfather Frost – the Russian version of Santa Claus.

On the 1st of January, at night, Grandfather Frost magically visits every family and leaves presents for children. There are no traditions with stockings here; he leaves the gifts under the New Year tree. Kids wake up in the morning and rush to see what is under the tree. This is the most exciting morning for them!

But let’s get back to New Year’s Eve. Usually, people start celebrating at about 9 p.m. or even later, it depends on the family’s own traditions. The celebration is basically a dinner party with a lot of dishes and drinks. People drink, eat, chat, sing, and have fun. Probably, the most traditional New Year dish is Olivier salad, made of sausages, diced boiled potatoes, vegetables and mayonnaise. In some countries, it is known as Russian salad.

Children usually eat something tasty, drink some fruit juice or soda and go to play in another room or outdoors. If there are little kids, their parents might invite Grandfather Frost to put on a little show for them, and give the children some presents. By the way, Russian Santa Claus does not work alone; he has a young assistant called Snegurochka. She is his granddaughter, and her name means something like «Snow Girl».

A few minutes before midnight, people pour some champagne, turn on their TVs and watch the New Year Presidential Message. After that, the TV shows the Kremlin Clock. The Kremlin Clock is the most well-known and important clock in the country, similar to Big Ben in England. At 12 o’clock sharp it chimes, and that marks the beginning of the New Year. Millions of people say, “Happy New Year!”, cheer, drink champagne and pull crackers.

Most of the celebration takes place during the night. On the 1st of January, most people wake up late and clean up after the celebration. Usually, there is still a lot of food left over. Every year, there is a long holiday period from the 1st to the 9th or 10th of January. Most people do not work on those days; they just rest and watch New Year TV shows and movies. After that period, everything goes back to normal. Grown-ups go to work and children go to school.

New Year is a great holiday. Everybody likes it very much. Especially this holiday is loved by children. New Year is considered to be a family holiday. A New Year’s tree is a symbol of celebration. It is usually covered with coloured balls and strings of coloured lights.

New Year’s Eve is a time for fun. People spend the holiday at home or in restaurants. The most popular New Year’s Eve drink is champagne. Champagne is the drink that symbolizes celebration and it is often served for the midnight toast. At 12 o’clock everybody raises a glass of champagne and says “Happy New Year!” New Year’s Eve festivals often continue until two or three o’clock in the morning.

New Year’s Day is a special day. Many people make New Year resolutions, give up bad habits or plan for future. From the ancient times to the present New Year’s customs have been connected with saying good-bye to the past and looking forward to a better future.

New Year is a fantastic holiday. Every child and even adult waits for it every time. It’s time of magic and new plans, presents and family celebration. People celebrate New Year few times per year in India. During this holiday people jump through the fire and throw colorful water to each other. They do all these things to have fun and to celebrate.

Italians also have interesting traditions. Before New Year they throw away all things they don’t use. And in Venice at midnight you can see many couples kissing each other. This tradition is very unique and in some countries people follow it because it’s so romantic.

New Year is a great holiday. Not only different countries but also families have their own traditions. I think it’s nice to have something personal and to follow it every year to have nice memories and connection with your relatives.

Essay on New Year

Holidays make our lives lively and interesting. We can have some fun, relax and don’t feel any pressure. Within the year there are a lot of holidays such as Mother’s Day, Victory Day, Christmas, May Day. Since childhood, my favorite holiday is New Year. We celebrate it on the 1st of January.

Peter the First changed the Russian calendar in 1699. He made the 31st of December, 1699 the last day of the year. The first of January 1700 became New Year’s Day.

I think each family has its own tradition during this day and I want to share some of mine. In my household we usually start getting ready for New Year in advance: we find the best presents, buy lots of food and adorn our flat with different garlands and the New Year tree. Sometimes we create our own costumes for New Year party because it’s a funny tradition in our family to celebrate the New Year in unusual clothes.

My father is excellent at cooking so he always makes meat dumplings, cooks chicken with oranges and his special vegetable pie. My brother and I cook some salads and my mother bakes fruit tarts. They are fantastic and taste heavenly. After famous supper, we meet with our family friends and head to the downtown to view fireworks, concerts and colorful carnivals. If the weather is nasty we stay at home, watch entertaining shows on TV and set off firecrackers in the yard. New Year’s holidays is the time for traveling and we visit our relatives in other cities too.

I really enjoy celebrating New Year’s holiday and, to my mind, every person looks forward to celebrating it with their family.

New Year in Russia is the most awaited, beautiful and fabulous holiday. Every year, Russians celebrate it on the night of December 31 to January 1. Already at the beginning of December in all cities of Russia streets are decorated with colored lights and lanterns, huge, green Christmas trees are being installed, which shine from a variety of colored light bulbs and Christmas tree decorations. Shop windows are decorated with Christmas lights. Everything around is soaked with magic and it seems as if you were caught in a fairy tale.

It is customary to celebrate New Year in Russia with family. People are carefully preparing for this holiday, and adults and children are looking forward to it. Fir-trees are set up and decorated in apartments and houses, everyone gives presents to each other, many guests are invited, and festive tables are laid with various treats. At 12 o’clock at night, when the Kremlin chimes on Red Square in Moscow begin to beat the last minute of the outgoing year, everyone makes wishes for the next year and raises their glasses of champagne. At this last minute of the year ended, the President of Russia congratulates all Russians on the New Coming Year. As soon as the chimes beat off the last blows, volleys of holiday fireworks and salute begin to explode from everywhere. The night sky is lit up with bright, colorful flashes. People congratulate each other on the New Year in coming, wish for the fulfillment of desire and all the best in the New Year.

Children are especially waiting for this holiday, as they believe that Santa Claus will come to them on a magical New Year’s Eve and put gifts under the Christmas tree, which they asked him in their letters to him. Celebration of the New Year brings people together and gives them joyful efforts and cheerful mood. Also, this New Year’s holiday gives people hope for a happy and peaceful life.

What is New Year»s?

Does everyone celebrate the New Year? Does the celebration fall in the same day each year? I think New Year»s is a holiday that everyone celebrates but will not be celebrated on the same day of each year. For instance, in my country, Vietnam, New Year»s day is different from the American New Year because we don»t go by the American calendar. We go by the Chinese calendar. Usually my New Year»s celebration is in Mid-January or February; while the Laotians» New Year is in April. The youngsters especially look forward to this ceremony because each one receives a small sum of money wrapped in the traditional red envelope.
